What is an Apprentice?

An apprentice is someone who is taking a trade and working under the guidance of skilled workers called journeypersons. Apprentices are required to attend three terms of school consisting of eight week blocks over a four or five year period and have completed 8000 hours of on the job training. The training is free and attending school is mandatory when asked to attend by the Millwright Regional Council of Ontario. If you fail to attend scheduled classes you will terminate your apprenticeship contract. Apprentices start at 60% of the journeypersons pay rate and wages are increased at periodic intervals until receiving his/her Certificate of Qualification.
